Expunging the Case
Expungement Process > Expunging the Case

After finding the case intended for expungement with the case search tool on the Expungement page, the user can take other steps in order to verify that the case matches the identifying information listed in the expungement court order. The user must be sure to verify a match as the expungement process is NON-REVERSIBLE (once a case is expunged, IT IS expunged).

Verifying the Case

Each entry within the search results from the case search tool can be selected to pull up a Case Summary. The Case Summary window shows more information for the case than is listed in the search results table. The summary includes data such as:

NOTE: Unknown case data is denoted by [UNK]. Expunged case data is denoted by [EXP].

If further verification is required, the user can view the entire case by clicking the View Case button at the bottom of the Case Summary window. Pressing the View Case button will open the selected case and allow the user to view all portions filled by the arresting officer (just like when using the LA Driving Search page).

After Case Verification

After the user has verified that the case matches the court order for expungement, he or she should click the Expunge Record button located at the bottom of the Case Summary window. Pressing the Expunge Record button will bring up the Record Expungement window that shows a small snapshot of data from the Case Summary window and allows for record expungement once the required court order has been scanned and uploaded.

NOTE: A court order for expungement must be uploaded in the form of a PDF file in order to expunge the case record.
WARNING: Please ensure that you have verified that this is the correct case referred to within the expungement court order as this is a NON-REVERSIBLE process.

Once a scanned copy of the expungement court order in PDF format has been selected, the user will be allowed to continue the expungement process by clicking the Expunge Record button. After the Expunge Record button is pressed, an Expungement Confirmation window will appear to allow for one final match verification for the case record before expungement. When the user has verified the case match, he or she can click the Confirm Expungement button. Pressing the Confirm Expungement button will upload the scanned court order PDF file and expunge the case within the LA Driving system.
